I think the same, the thickness is an annoying issue with modular buildings.

I'm not really informed, but I don't think so at least I hope not, it's certainly true that they seem to be disappearing from sets where they were previously used, but I think that for free construction they are still super useful to remove them just like that.

I can't say for sure but in my experience I would say that they do not expire.

Currently it is a benefit of the Premium subscription, that's why it won't let you configure it if you don't have one.
