LEGO Technic - 42123: McLaren Senna GTR | Designer Video

Actions

Although the LEGO Technic McLaren Senna GTR (42123) has been available for a while, LEGO has just released a video of the set. This is the designer video, in this case LEGO designer Aurélien Rouge talks us through the process of creating the car. One challenge he mentions is the V8 engine for the car that uses smaller elements to create which is connected to the real axle. Another thing is the authenticity of Senna using stickers for details and sponsors.

Watch on YouTube

Definitely an interesting video that we recommend to all LEGO fans to learn more about the creative process behind the sets.

Build LEGO on the first date, why not?

Actions

Today is Valentine's Day and LEGO has surprised us with the recent release of a video showing some strangers going out on their first dates using an unconventional method to break the ice, they do it by building the new LEGO Botanical Collection sets. The couples in the video engage in conversation while building the sets, some with the bouquet of flowers (10280) and others with the bonsai tree (10281), a method that we see in the video helps to relieve the tension that is generated when people have their first dates, who knows if with this video LEGO encourages others to try it when they have dates.

Watch on YouTube

This video although it has been a surprise follows the clear strategy marked by LEGO in recent months, LEGO 18+ products, definitely LEGO has realized the amount of adults who are consuming LEGO today and is betting very strongly for them, something that years ago we had not seen.

Regarding the LEGO Botanical Collection sets, after their release last month they are sold out everywhere and it is not being an easy task to spot any restock that appears online, we will keep you posted if something like this happens.

Watch on YouTube

LEGO IDEAS Reveals Medieval Set - The Honourable Blacksmith

Actions

LEGO Ideas has taken a leaf out of the history books with the design of its latest set, a charming Medieval Blacksmith’s house. The new set is based on an original design by an avid LEGO builder, which achieved over 10,000 votes from LEGO fans worldwide – giving it the green light to go into production.

LEGO superfan Clemens Fiedler originally submitted the concept to LEGO Ideas; a LEGO initiative that takes new ideas that have been imagined and voted for by fans and turns them into reality. The LEGO Ideas® Medieval Blacksmith set harks back to a time when cottage industries and artisans were the cornerstone of society and was brought to life by LEGO designers Wes Talbott and Austin Carlson.

When thinking of medieval times, the focus is normally on the kings and queens, knights and ladies, their castles and the battles between good and evil, but this new medieval set has an unexpected twist showing the unsung hero of those epic battles and adventures - the humble Blacksmith.

True to the era, the LEGO® Ideas Medieval Blacksmith set includes bold period design features from the timber framed walls to the gothic lattice windows, providing much intrigue and interest to fans of medieval architecture.

The LEGO® Ideas Medieval Blacksmith set is positioned in enchanting grounds, featuring a well-stocked cottage-style garden complete with squash patch and a gnarly apple tree, while the brickwork is tinged with moss for added realism.

The inside is set over three separate floors which are fully furnished and equipped with everything a medieval blacksmith would need. Interior items include stocks of raw materials, coal to keep the furnace hot, and a bellows complete with lightbrick to make the coals glow. The roof and top two levels can be removed for easy viewing of the inside.

Further setting the scene, the LEGO Ideas® Medieval Blacksmith set is completed with the inclusion of four minifigures: a blacksmith, an archer and two Black Falcon Knights with four swords, three shields and a halberd. Several animals can be found in the grounds outside the house, including a horse to pull the knight’s supply cart, a pet dog and a small tree frog.

Clemens Fiedler commented: “I love building classical house designs and honouring all the great attention to detail you can recreate with LEGO elements – especially medieval architecture styles, colours and design. I hope fellow LEGO fans will enjoy traveling back in time; sense the heat, sounds and smells from the forge and anvil and soak up the atmosphere of this classical creative craft as they build the set.”

Samuel Thomas Liltorp Johnson, Design Manager at the LEGO Group commented: “Designing the LEGO® Ideas Medieval Blacksmith set has been an exciting journey, taking us back hundreds of years to celebrate one of the true heroes of the Middle Ages. Telling the story of the blacksmith caught our imagination, and the rest was history.

“We loved the idea of creating a small blacksmith’s house on the outskirts of the medieval world, where every knight goes for a set of shining armour. Without doubt, fans will be fascinated by the workings of the forge, the architectural details and the characters they find there when they build this set.”

The new LEGO® Ideas Medieval Blacksmith set is the latest example of how the LEGO Group aims to inspire builders of all ages to build, rebuild and get excited by the process of creation.

The LEGO Medieval Blacksmith Set is on sale on LEGO.com and in LEGO Retail stores from 1st February.

New version of a legend: Two-in-one LEGO Porsche 911 Turbo and 911 Targa

Actions

The LEGO Group has taken the covers off a new LEGO version of one of the most coveted nameplates in automotive history, with the unveiling of the two-in-one LEGO Porsche 911 Turbo and 911 Targa set that brings together two icons from the 1970s and 80s.

LEGO builders and classic car enthusiasts alike will love the dual building routes of this set. The new two-in-one LEGO Porsche 911 Turbo and 911 Targa set can be built either as the fixed roof 911 Turbo model or as the open-roofed 911 Targa at one time, allowing fans to choose between classic coupe or convertible style.

Channelling the essence of the ubiquitous German sports car, the LEGO Porsche 911 Turbo and 911 Targa variants feature all the hallmarks of their namesakes, from the aerodynamic shoulder line to angled headlamps and sculpted bonnet with Porsche badge and rear-mounted flat six ‘boxer’ engine.

Beneath their elegant silhouettes, the LEGO Porsche 911 Turbo and 911 Targa variants hide a wealth of detail. On both versions of the model, the 2+2 sports seats and dashboard are finished in dark orange and nougat, an eclectic colour scheme based on contemporary upholstery options from the Porsche 911. Further interior details include a handbrake, gearshift and functional steering, while the front seats also tilt forward for access to the rear bench seats.

Several features which are unique to the 911 Turbo and 911 Targa variants of the set ensure they are equally characterful but distinct when built. The LEGO Porsche 911 Turbo sports distinctive Turbo badging, a wide rear axle, turbocharger and intercooler, denoting its blistering performance credentials. Its athletic look is completed with an integrated rear spoiler.

Meanwhile, the LEGO Porsche 911 Targa’s roof is fully removable and can be stowed underneath the hood of the car. The iconic Targa Bar completes the look, along with Targa badging and a brick-built wraparound rear window.

Mike Psiaki, Design Master at the LEGO Group, commented: “Taking ownership of a brand-new sports car is an experience to savour and this is a feeling we wanted to recreate for LEGO fans.

“As we were designing the car, the hardest decision to make was whether we would make the Turbo or Targa variant of the car. It was such a tough call that we engineered the ability to build the LEGO Porsche 911 Turbo and Targa from a single set. Without doubt, fans of the 911 all over the world who have long admired these cars will love the opportunity to build both versions!”

Fabian Schmölz, Exterior Designer at Porsche, said: “We know that the Porsche 911 evokes a certain magic for customers and fans of our brand worldwide, and the latest LEGO additions to the 911 family - the LEGO Porsche 911 Turbo and 911 Targa - are no different.

“These incarnations of our sportscar icon, accurately capture the unmistakeable design of the cars they are based on, and are set to bring much enjoyment to a new family of fans.”

To celebrate the launch of the LEGO Porsche 911 Turbo and 911 Targa, LEGO is also offering the first buyers the chance to receive a limited-edition LEGO Porsche owners pack with their purchase. The pack contains a certificate of ownership, an official LEGO Porsche card wallet and a set of four unique art prints based on contemporary Porsche 911 adverts, all presented in a smart collector’s wallet. This highly collectible gift with purchase is available in limited numbers for orders of the set placed through the LEGO VIP loyalty program.

Members of LEGO’s free VIP loyalty program will be able to purchase the LEGO Porsche 911 Turbo and Targa set from February 16th on LEGO.com. From March 1st, the set will be on sale exclusively in LEGO stores and on LEGO.com.

Let creativity bloom with new botanical builds from the LEGO Group

Actions

Today, the LEGO Group has revealed a new range of mindful models for the green-fingered. The decorative LEGO® Botanical Collection includes a stunning LEGO® Flower Bouquet to brighten the home, and a LEGO® Bonsai Tree for those looking to be more zen in the new year.

While many people seek out green spaces to destress and relax, adults can now bring a touch of nature into their home and unwind as they create and customise their botanical builds….and the great news is that LEGO plants don’t need to be watered to stay fresh.

With 7 in 10 adults saying they often research new ways to destress(1) and over 8 in 10 saying play helps them relax(2), the new sets could provide the perfect perennial project for those looking to get creative, destress and find moments of mindfulness in a day.

Both sets in the new LEGO Botanical Collection include a number of elements made from plant-based plastic, produced using sustainably sourced sugarcane.

LEGO to invest $400 million to accelerate sustainability.

Actions

The LEGO Group today announced plans to invest up to US$400 million over three years to accelerate sustainability and social responsibility initiatives. The investment will cover both long-term investments and ongoing costs. The company, which has made a series of moves over the past 10 years to build a better planet for future generations, believes it’s increasingly urgent and important to prioritise environmental and social activity.

The LEGO Group CEO, Niels B Christiansen said: “We cannot lose sight of the fundamental challenges facing future generations. It’s critical we take urgent action now to care for the planet and future generations. As a company who looks to children as our role models, we are inspired by the millions of kids who have called for more urgent action on climate change. We believe they should have access to opportunities to develop the skills necessary to create a sustainable future. We will step up our efforts to use our resources, networks, expertise and platforms to make a positive difference.”

As a next step, the company will begin to phase out single-use plastic bags used in LEGO boxes to package the loose bricks. This is part of its ambition to make all its packaging sustainable by the end of 2025. From 2021, Forest Stewardship Council-certified recyclable paper bags will be trialled in boxes.

Christiansen said: “We have received many letters from children about the environment asking us to remove single-use plastic packaging. We have been exploring alternatives for some time and the passion and ideas from children inspired us to begin to make the change.”

Moving away from the existing packaging is not a simple task and will take time as new material must be durable, light weight and enhance the building experience. Several prototypes made from a range of different sustainable materials have so far been tested with hundreds of parents and children. Children liked the paper bags being trialled in 2021 as they were environmentally friendly and easy to open.

Long-term investment in building a sustainable future

In addition to developing and implementing sustainable materials, the up to US$400million investment will also focus on a range of social and environmentally focussed actions to inspire children through learning through play, making the business more circular, and achieving carbon neutral operations. The activity will drive meaningful, long-term change aligned to two United Nations Sustainable Development Goals: #4 Quality Education and #12 Responsible Consumption and Production:

Children

By 2022, the LEGO Group aims to reach 8 million children around the world annually with learning through play through a range of activities with partners, in collaboration with the LEGO Foundation. It will build on its work with organisations such as UNICEF, Save the Children and local partners to scale up programmes that give children-in-need access to play and opportunities to develop life-long skills such as problem solving, collaboration and communication. In 2019, 1.8 million children were reached through such programmes. 25% of profits from the LEGO Group go to funding the LEGO Foundation’s projects, activities and partnerships.

Circularity

The LEGO System in Play inspires endless play possibilities that supports the principles of circular design – a product made of quality materials that can be used and reused. The quality, durability, safety and consistency of LEGO bricks mean they can be passed from generation to generation. Bricks made today, fit those made more than 40 years ago.

Programmes will be put in place to encourage people to donate their pre-loved bricks to children in need of play. LEGO Replay, which was successfully trialled in the United States in 2019, will be rolled out in two additional countries by the end of 2022. So far, LEGO Replay has donated bricks to over 23,000 children across the United States(1).

Sustainable Materials

Work will continue on the company’s Sustainable Materials Programme, which employs more than 150 experts, to create sustainable products and packaging. In 2015, the Group set a target to make its products from sustainable materials by 2030. It will expand its use of bio-bricks, such as those made from sugar cane, which currently account for almost 2% of its element portfolio.

It will continue research into new, more sustainable plastics from renewable and recycled sources, and join forces with research institutes and other companies especially those developing new recycling and bio-based material production technologies to find materials which are as durable and high quality as those used today(2).

The planned investments include both costs associated with the development of new sustainable materials and the investments in manufacturing equipment.

Zero Waste & Carbon Neutral Operations

The Group’s manufacturing operations will be carbon neutral by 2022. To achieve this, additional solar panels will be installed on all its factories and onsite capacity will be supplemented with the procurement of renewable energy. Further investments will be made to improve energy usage, for example by installing new systems that use ambient air in cooling processes during LEGO brick production.

Improved waste handling and reduction in water consumption will further reduce the Group’s operational impact on the environment. No waste will be diverted to landfill by 2025 and water use will drop by 10% by 2022(3).

Joining forces to have a positive impact

The LEGO Group will continue to work with organisations such as the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, World Wild Fund for Nature, RE100, UNICEF and Save the Children in order to create the greatest impact.

Christiansen said: “At a time when the world is facing numerous challenges, companies must take action to create a lasting positive impact on the environment and society. No one can do it alone. I urge companies, governments, parents, children and NGOs to continue to join forces to create a sustainable future for our children, the builders of tomorrow.”
