DDOB #2 - ASMR Video: Watch a LEGO OLED Terminal Come to Life

Actions

Watch on YouTube

LEGO enthusiasts, brace yourselves because Christmas has come early! We're talking about the insanely cool LEGO microcontroller OLED terminals created by James "Ancient" Brown. We've always been amazed by them, but until recently, there wasn't much information available about how they were made. That's changed now, thanks to a fascinating new video from Ancient himself that provides an in-depth look at the process.

The video is a maker's dream come true, complete with ASMR-style close-up shots of each step in the process. It's a bit different from your typical how-to video because there's no talking, but that doesn't detract from its appeal. Instead, you get to enjoy the soothing sounds of the materials being crafted into something amazing.

As it turns out, making one of these terminals requires a whole bunch of different skills and crafts. The video shows everything from soldering tiny PCBs and RP2040 microcontrollers to mixing and molding resin. And let's not forget the custom 3D prints that are necessary to hold everything in place!

[upl-image-preview url=https://cdn.brickzip.com/uploads/2023-04-22/1682181796-18180-computer-in-a-brick.jpg]

Watching the process is nothing short of mesmerizing. Ancient has clearly perfected the art of making these terminals, and it shows in every step of the process. But perhaps the most impressive part of the video is seeing the final result. The resin screen glows beautifully, and the OLED display is crystal clear. It even appears to have touch controls that respond to different pushes!

We can only hope that one day Ancient will release the build files for these terminals. However, after watching the video, we understand why they might be hesitant. There's a lot of work that goes into creating these amazing devices, and it's not exactly an easy project to replicate. For now, we'll just have to settle for admiring them from afar and feeling a little bit envious of Ancient's skills.

LEGO has just announced the launch of a new set that will excite both brick and car enthusiasts alike. The LEGO Icons Classic Land Rover Defender 90 set has been created in celebration of Land Rover's 75th anniversary and is a faithful replication of the classic Defender. With 2,336 pieces, this set has all the accessories needed for an off-road adventure.

To mark the launch of the new set, the LEGO Group placed a bright yellow classic Land Rover Defender in the Scottish Highlands and transformed it into the hardest to reach LEGO store in the world. The challenge was for two adventurers to navigate the tough Scottish terrain and be the first to reach the remote LEGO store to build the new set. Raha Moharrak, the first Saudi woman to climb Mount Everest and the Seven Summits, and native Scottish adventurer Aldo Kane, were the two bold adventurers who took on this challenge.

At the heart of the adventure is the LEGO Icons Classic Land Rover Defender 90 set, available in sage green color. The set features a two-in-one format, allowing fans to build and display the everyday road-ready model before activating adventure mode and customizing the build with accessories, including a roof rack, engine snorkel, off-road front bumper with extra protection, and a working winch, side rails, jerrycans, a toolbox and a jack, a shovel, pickaxe, hammer, and axe, a fire extinguisher, and traction plates for crossing mud and sand.

Kurt Kristiansen, LEGO Design Master, commented on the challenges of bringing the iconic Classic Land Rover Defender to life in brick form. He noted that during the design process, the team wanted to infuse the LEGO set with a sense of adventure, allowing fans to race through the Scottish Highlands, navigate water or even sandy dunes.

Actions

[upl-image-preview url=https://cdn.brickzip.com/uploads/2023-02-18/1676680391-726545-the-ultimate-guide-to-storing-and-organizing-your-lego-collection.jpg]

[upl-image-preview url=https://cdn.brickzip.com/uploads/2023-02-18/1676680745-781917-5004142-large.jpg]

¿Cómo almacenar LEGO a largo plazo?

LEGO Storage Ideas: Tips for Storing and Organizing Your LEGO Collection

Actions

[upl-image-preview url=https://cdn.brickzip.com/uploads/2023-02-18/1676680391-726545-the-ultimate-guide-to-storing-and-organizing-your-lego-collection.jpg]

Importance of proper storage of LEGO

Proper storage of LEGO is crucial to ensure that the bricks and pieces are kept in good condition, making them last longer and remain usable for future building projects. Without proper storage, LEGO pieces can become damaged or lost, making it difficult to build with them. Additionally, organizing LEGO pieces can help streamline the building process and make it easier to find the pieces needed for a specific project. In this article, we'll provide tips and guidelines on how to properly store and organize your LEGO collection to ensure that it stays in good condition and is always ready for your next building adventure.

What do people use to store LEGO?

When it comes to storing LEGO, there are several options available to choose from. Some people prefer simple storage solutions, while others opt for more specialized options designed specifically for LEGO. The type of storage you choose will depend on factors such as the size of your LEGO collection, available space, and personal preference.

Examples of different storage solutions

  • Plastic storage bins: Plastic storage bins are a popular choice for storing LEGO as they are affordable, widely available, and come in a range of sizes. They can be easily stacked, making them a great option for those with limited space. However, it can be challenging to keep LEGO pieces organized within a large bin.

  • Stackable storage containers: Stackable storage containers are similar to plastic storage bins, but they typically have individual compartments for smaller items, such as LEGO pieces. This makes it easier to organize and locate specific pieces.

  • Drawer units: Drawer units are another popular option for storing LEGO, as they allow for easy access to pieces while keeping them organized. You can use either plastic or wooden drawer units, depending on your preference.

  • LEGO-specific storage solutions: LEGO also offers their own storage solutions, such as the LEGO brick storage system, which features stackable containers in the shape of LEGO bricks. These containers come in a range of sizes and can be easily stacked and organized.
    [upl-image-preview url=https://cdn.brickzip.com/uploads/2023-02-18/1676680745-781917-5004142-large.jpg]

  • Other brands that offer storage solutions for LEGO, such as IKEA: In addition to LEGO-specific storage solutions, other brands, such as IKEA, offer a range of storage options that can be used for LEGO. IKEA's Trofast system, for example, features a series of plastic bins that can be easily stacked and arranged in a variety of configurations. Other brands such as Sterilite, Rubbermaid, and Akro-Mils also offer storage solutions that can be used for LEGO.

Overall, there are many different storage options available for storing LEGO, and the best choice will depend on your individual needs and preferences.

How do you store LEGO long term?

Storing LEGO long term is essential to keep the pieces in good condition and prevent damage. Exposure to sunlight, moisture, and fluctuations in temperature can cause LEGO to discolor or warp over time.

Tips for storing LEGO long term

  • Keep LEGO out of direct sunlight: Direct sunlight can cause LEGO pieces to fade or discolor over time, so it's best to store LEGO in a place that is out of direct sunlight.

  • Keep LEGO in a cool, dry place: Humidity and temperature fluctuations can also cause LEGO to warp or become discolored over time. Therefore, it's essential to keep LEGO in a cool, dry place, such as a closet or storage room.

  • Store LEGO in airtight containers: Storing LEGO in airtight containers can help keep them safe from moisture and dust, preventing warping and discoloration.

  • Avoid stacking LEGO too high: Stacking LEGO too high can cause pressure on the pieces, which can lead to warping or cracking. Therefore, it's best to store LEGO in multiple containers rather than stacking them all in one large container.

What to do with LEGO sets after they are built?

After building a LEGO set, you have several options for storing it. You can display it, disassemble it and store the pieces, or store it as a completed set.

Tips for disassembling LEGO sets for storage

If you plan to store your LEGO set pieces, it's essential to disassemble them properly to prevent damage. Take apart the set in reverse order, being careful not to bend or break any pieces. Store the pieces in airtight containers, organized by color or type.

How do you store LEGO in a small room?

Storing LEGO in a small room can be a challenge, but there are ways to maximize space and keep your collection organized. In a small room, floor space is often limited, which means that storage solutions need to be creative and space-efficient. It can also be difficult to find a place to build LEGO creations without taking up valuable workspace.

Tips for maximizing space when storing LEGO in a small room

  • Use vertical storage solutions: Vertical storage solutions, such as shelving or hanging organizers, can help maximize space and keep LEGO organized.

  • Take advantage of under-bed storage: Under-bed storage containers can be a great way to store LEGO while keeping it out of the way.

  • Use wall-mounted storage solutions: Wall-mounted storage solutions, such as pegboards or wall-mounted bins, can help free up floor space and keep LEGO pieces organized.

By using these tips and getting creative with your storage solutions, you can keep your LEGO collection organized and accessible in even the smallest of rooms.

What is the best way to store built LEGOs?

Storing built LEGO presents a unique challenge because of its size and fragility. If you have built LEGO sets that you want to keep assembled and on display, you need to find a way to store them that doesn't take up too much space and protects them from damage.

One of the biggest challenges of storing built LEGO is that it can be easily damaged. If the set is not stored properly, the pieces can fall off or break, which can be frustrating if you spent a lot of time building it. Additionally, built LEGO sets can attract dust and dirt, which can be difficult to clean off without taking the set apart.

Tips for storing built LEGO

  • Keep built LEGO out of direct sunlight: Direct sunlight can cause built LEGO sets to fade or discolor over time, so it's best to store them in a place that is out of direct sunlight.

  • Store built LEGO in a display case: Storing built LEGO in a display case can help protect them from dust and damage while allowing you to enjoy them.

  • Take apart built LEGO sets for storage: If you don't have the space to display built LEGO sets, it's best to take them apart and store the pieces in airtight containers, organized by color or type.

Built LEGO sets can take up a lot of space, making it difficult to store them properly. Additionally, exposure to light, dust, or humidity can cause them to discolor or warp over time.

Is it worth it keeping the boxes for LEGO sets?

Many LEGO collectors wonder whether it's worth it to keep the boxes for LEGO sets. There are pros and cons to keeping the boxes, so it ultimately comes down to personal preference.

One advantage of keeping the boxes is that they can add value to your collection. If you have a rare or discontinued set, having the original box can make it more valuable to collectors. Additionally, some collectors simply enjoy having the boxes as part of their collection and appreciate the artwork and design that goes into them.

On the other hand, keeping boxes can take up a lot of space, especially if you have a large LEGO collection. It can also be difficult to store boxes properly to prevent damage from moisture or sunlight. Finally, if you're not concerned about the value of your LEGO sets, keeping the boxes may not be worth the effort.

If you do decide to keep the boxes, there are some tips you can follow to keep them in good condition. First, make sure to store them in a dry, cool place to prevent damage from moisture. You can also store them vertically to prevent them from getting crushed. Finally, consider using plastic sleeves or other protective covers to prevent damage from sunlight or dust.

[upl-image-preview url=https://cdn.brickzip.com/uploads/2022-12-27/1672105329-913702-iotw7-7.jpg]

[upl-image-preview url=https://cdn.brickzip.com/uploads/2022-12-27/1672105350-664744-iotw7-12.jpg]

As we approach the 30th anniversary of the classic city-building game SimCity 2000, a LEGO Architecture-inspired microscale build of the game's iconic city has been proposed on LEGO Ideas. This fan-created set would allow players to recreate the digital metropolis they know and love, using the perfect tool for building a model town – LEGO bricks!

SimCity 2000 was the follow-up to the original SimCity game created by Will Wright in 1989. It improved on the formula in every way, most notably by introducing a new isometric perspective that became the standard for tycoon and building games for years to come. Playing SimCity 2000 as a kid always evoked images of model towns, making LEGO bricks a fitting medium to bring the digital city to life.

The proposed LEGO set is built on a 3x3 grid of 16x16 Technic base plates, with the scale set at one 2x2 plate per in-game tile. The buildings in the set sit on one of four plate sizes: 2x2, 4x4, 6x6, and 8x8 studs, with the tallest building standing just under 14 bricks high. The city sprawls over 9 blocks (8 city and 1 undeveloped countryside) and features a total of 60 structures, including 14 industrial buildings, 13 commercial buildings, 18 residential buildings, and 13 service buildings.

[upl-image-preview url=https://cdn.brickzip.com/uploads/2022-12-27/1672105329-913702-iotw7-7.jpg]

[upl-image-preview url=https://cdn.brickzip.com/uploads/2022-12-27/1672105350-664744-iotw7-12.jpg]

All buildings in the set are faithful recreations of structures from SimCity 2000, with the designer taking care to ensure they are as accurate as possible while using a limited colour palette. In addition to the buildings, the set also includes numerous trees, cars, and power lines for added detail.

The proposed SimCity 2000 LEGO set has a total of 2933 pieces, and its dimensions are 48 studs wide, 48 studs long, and 19 studs high. Its expandable design allows for limitless expansion in all directions, with players able to attach additional Technic base plates to existing city blocks and continue developing their metropolis.

Overall, the proposed SimCity 2000 LEGO set is a perfect tribute to the iconic game's 30th anniversary, and its faithful recreation of the game's structures would make it a must-have for both LEGO and SimCity fans alike.

The collection includes the Daffodils set, which was released on January 1st, as well as the new Wild Flower Bouquet and Dried Flower Centerpiece sets that will be released on February 1st.

The Daffodils set includes 216 pieces and is priced at $16.99 CAD, while the Wild Flower Bouquet set features 939 pieces and is priced at $79.99 CAD. The Dried Flower Centerpiece set includes 812 pieces and is priced at $69.99 CAD. All three sets do not come with any minifigures.

The Wild Flower Bouquet set catches the eye with its vibrant colors and NPU pirates hats, making it a perfect addition to the previously released Flower Bouquet set. The Dried Flower Centerpiece set may not appeal to everyone due to its muted, dead look, but the set's interesting bricks can be used for other projects. The set is also designed to be disassembled at the center, making it perfect for circular arrangements when multiple sets are combined.

[upl-image-preview url=https://cdn.brickzip.com/uploads/2022-11-23/1669175761-229230-iotw6-6.jpg]

[upl-image-preview url=https://cdn.brickzip.com/uploads/2022-11-23/1669175779-627920-iotw6-10.jpg]

  • Entradas ocultas (y menos ocultas).

[upl-image-preview url=https://cdn.brickzip.com/uploads/2022-11-23/1669175780-948576-iotw6-14.jpg]

This week, in the IOTW (IDEA of The Week) section, we have the pleasure to review the project "Willow - Battle of Tir Asleen" by designer MontyMatte, which this time brings back the magic, thanks to the apprentice wizard Willow Ufgood, who is ready to start his epic journey and join a world of Nelwyn, Daikini, Brownies, a two-headed monster and a magical tale.

The model by designer MontyMatte, shows a detailed interpretation of the battle scene at Tir Asleen Castle (closing of the 1988 film) with an impressive 3,000 bricks used.

[upl-image-preview url=https://cdn.brickzip.com/uploads/2022-11-23/1669175761-229230-iotw6-6.jpg]

This creation includes the following minifigures, animals and iconic objects:

  • Willow with the magic acorn and Elora Danan as a baby, Madmartigan and Sorsha.
  • Fin Raziel as goat and raven.
  • The Brownies.
  • General Kael with 3 warriors of Nockmar.
  • A troll (including the troll d*), a skeleton and an Eberisk (A two-headed monster - oh my god!).
  • A rat, some spiders and a horse.
  • Frozen prisoners (with a little Easter egg for all you castle fans).

On the other hand, the model has four distinct sections:

  • The castle wall with the main gate.
  • Left tower with armoury and prison / right tower with weapons room and ambush.
  • Tree with a beautiful axe.

Among the functions offered by this set, we find the following:

  • Separate sections to make them easier to play with.
  • Main door and rake that opens/closes.
  • Hidden (and less hidden) entrances.
  • Flames to set the castle on fire, as you like.
  • Barrel defence; spider surprise; crossbow ambush.

The functionality of this set leaves no one indifferent, we love to see designers taking care that the sets have a good playability/functionality that goes beyond display design.

The designer has explained the noble motivations behind this project, he tells us he grew up under the reign of the LEGO castle and pirate theme and was enthralled by the fantasy films of the 80s and 90s, and has recently rediscovered his love of LEGO as an adult (AFOL Alert!).

Taking up his love of LEGO, he has decided to create a model that today's children can grow up with as he did. At the same time, the children of yesterday (like him) can draw on the memories of their childhood to experience nostalgic and magical moments. With this ambition, it has been very important that both today's children and yesterday's children can find excitement in this set. Combining playability and the passion for collecting and displaying.

We'll be keeping an eye on MontyMatte interesting project, if you're interested in helping this project reach 10,000 votes to get the LEGO IDEAS team's review, here's the link.

What do you think of this project, do you think it would be a good candidate for LEGO IDEAS, let us know in the comments!
